Reconnect with Nature in the Land of Fire & Ice

Standard DreamTrip
Experience all things Icelandic, from volcanic landscapes & hot-spring baths to magical northern lights. Plus, take an exhilarating walk between 2 continents & enjoy a fun city tour of Reykjavik. Book by September 10.

About Your Trip

A photographer’s inspiration, an adventurer’s bucket-list journey, an outdoor enthusiast’s mecca, or a geologist’s dream — whatever the reason, Iceland captivates all who visit. And you’ll see why on a tour of the southwestern part of the country and its out-of-this-world terrain of craters, fissures, lava fields and more.

Start your full-day tour at two incredible lakes — Kleifarvatn and Graenavatn — for insight into the supreme splendor and awe-inspiring beauty of Iceland. Continue across Reykjanes peninsula to Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, the only part of the 10,000-mile-long (16,000-kilometer-long) Mid-Atlantic Ridge that’s above sea level. Then, get ready for some otherworldly bubbling mud pools and wafting steam at the geothermal areas of Krysuvik and Gunnuhver. At Grindavik, take a break in this quaint fishing village known for restaurants serving freshly caught seafood. Afterward, it’s back on the road for more dramatic seascapes at Brimketill, where breaking waves fill a naturally formed pool, and Valahnukur, where towering cliffs provide a home for thousands of birds.

Before your stop at natural hot-spring baths, take a once-in-a-lifetime journey from Europe to North American in a matter of minutes. How is this possible? It’s easy — just walk across a bridge over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and you’ve done it! In the evening, embark on a nighttime adventure to see one of the world’s most amazing sights — the northern lights. Put on your warmest clothing and transfer to the outskirts of Reykjavik for a possible viewing of the aurora borealis that lights up the night sky in bursts of spectacular colors and shapes.

And the fun doesn’t stop there. The next day, you’ll take a walking tour of the city center. It’s a compact area with many attractions, such as the parliament building by the Austurvollur public square, Hallgrimskirkja church, Laugavegur shopping street and even a pond outside City Hall.

What we love:
• Most of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that stretches from the Arctic to the Antarctic is underwater. This massive mountain ridge is made up of 2 tectonic plates (Eurasian and North American) that are slowly moving apart at 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) per year.
• Mysteries and oddities are part of the Icelandic culture. At Kleifarvatn, a serpent-like creature may haunt the depths of this lake, while at Gunnuhver, an angry ghost is said to live within this geothermal field.
• Your hot-spring experience is at Secret Lagoon. Established in 1891, it’s purported to be the oldest swimming pool in Iceland.
• Reykjavik gets most of its energy from geothermal power, making it one of the greenest cities in the world.

Destination

Reykjavik is a popular destination not only for fans of Viking history and culture, but also for its impressive reputation as one of the cleanest, greenest and safest cities in the world. Visitors love to frequent the shops, restaurants and bars surrounding the Austurvollur public square, as well as the monumental church of Hallgrimur (also called Hallgrimskirkja), which is designed to resemble the lava flows of Iceland’s landscape.

Iceland delivers in spades when it comes to natural wonders. The nation is one of the best locations to view the northern lights, and the grand fjords are also a sight to behold. The majestic Gullfoss waterfall is a popular tourist draw, as are whale-watching excursions, which are widely available. The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is one of the most visited sites in Iceland for swimming and bathing.
