Celebrate the Heritage of Tianjin & Beyond

Standard DreamTrip
Enjoy 5 comprehensive tours to amazing places in northeastern China, including UNESCO-protected Great Wall of China & Mountain Resort, Kiev aircraft carrier & centuries-old temples — plus, get immersed in local customs and traditions in Gubei Water Town. Book by October 13.

About Your Trip

From Tianjin to Gubei Water Town and back, experience the magnificent culture, history and nature of northeastern China. Start in Tianjin for a tour of interesting neighborhoods, including Five Great Avenues where you’ll take a horse-and-carriage ride. In the Hebei district, visit Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall where collections of objects showcase the diversity of knowledge and skills passed down through generations. At nearby Nanshi Grocery Street, stroll around this large food-centric shopping area. Finally, in the Xiqing district, explore Shi Family Grand Courtyard, one of the city’s first mansions.

Then, head east to Binhai for a look around Tianjin Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park, home to the retired Soviet navy warship Kiev as well as several fighter airplanes and helicopters. What really makes it exciting are the theme park’s performances, such as a thrilling mock battle on the decks of the ship, dance and song shows and parades. Transfer to Binhai Library. Known for its spectacular design, the library features an atrium with vaulted ceilings, terraced bookshelves and a spherical-shaped auditorium called “The Eye."

Your incredible journey continues north to the resort area of Gubei Water Town on the edge of the Great Wall of China. Nestled beside mountains, a scenic lake and a winding canal, it was built as a replica of an ancient water town, complete with easy access to the Simatai section of the wall. While there, you’ll stop at a brewery and liquor factory. At Zhenyuan Escort Agency, experience life during times gone by when the area had armed escorts — especially the famous bodyguard Zhang Zhenyuan — for protection. Nearby Eight Banners Guild Hall houses many artifacts of the area’s past that honor the Plain Yellow Banner troops from the Qing dynasty military.

The next day, you’ll travel to Chengde and spend time at a stunning palace-garden-temple complex that’s also a UNESCO-protected site. Within hills, lakes and forests, Mountain Resort features several outlying temples, and you’ll visit 2 of them: Putuo Zongcheng Temple, and Xumi Fushou Temple. End your day at Mountain Resort itself, a place where emperors spent their summers and present-day visitors can marvel at scenic spots — 72 in total!

On the way back to Tianjin, you’ll stop to take in the Simatai section of the Great Wall of China. Originally constructed between 550 and 577 and rebuilt in the 1300s, this section stretches 3 miles (5 kilometers) across Yanshan Mountain’s steep terrain and comprises 35 impressive watchtowers placed strategically along the wall.

What we love:
• Built in 1875 by a wealthy merchant, the Shi Family Grand Courtyard holds many well-preserved artifacts that reveal the life and times of the mansion's residents. Now a museum, it features gardens, pavilions, stone sculptures and rooms with antiques and paintings.
• Although Badaling, Mutianyu and other sections of the Great Wall of China remain, the Simatai part boasts an exceptionally picturesque landscape, ideal for photographers and hikers.
• The scenic spots at Mountain Resort abound — lakes, palaces, temples, imperial gardens and much more.
• To maximize your enjoyment, download the DreamTrips™ app to access DreamTrips Local — then earn points on dining, entertainment, spa experiences & more at select spots recommended by DreamTrippers just like you!

Destination

Tianjin, China, may be known as the gateway to Beijing, but it’s also an incredible city that holds its own. Going back to the year 960, it began as a quiet settlement at the confluence of Hai and Ziya Rivers and prospered over the centuries into a major port center. The city also enjoys its position on a section of the Grand Canal of China, a UNESCO-protected site and the world’s longest man-made waterway. In town, visitors will find historic landmarks, mouthwatering street food and eclectic neighborhoods.

Gubei Water Town completed construction in 2014 as a tourist area designed to replicate its original water village from the Liao and Jin dynasties. Authentic-looking features include stone bridges, narrow cobblestone streets and traditional-style wooden houses.
